24 hr Scrimmathon – Sk8 The Netherlands

June 15th, 2013

Hey, all you derby fanatics out there!

We asked you a couple of weeks ago to block your diaries for the weekend of 7th – 8th September, to participate in the already legendary Scrimmathon that the Amsterdam Derby Dames are organising. After a lot of planning and puzzling on how to put this huge event together, we now can give you all the details you need to take part.

Although most us will primarily like the idea of having a 24-hour roller derby session, we cannot stress enough that we don’t just do this to please the derby-minded: Sk8 The Netherlands is all about raising a fist against sex trafficking. It may seem like something that doesn’t affect us or our friends directly, but sadly enough, it happens on a huge scale, and right under our noses. We are sure you get our drift when we say that Amsterdam is not just the capital of the country…

Luckily most of us can only imagine how it would feel being forced to sell your body. In a foreign country. Your passport taken away from you. Not getting paid. This contravenes everything roller derby stands for. That is exactly why the Amsterdam Derby Dames are trying to take a stand against sex trafficking, together with Dom City Dolls and the American initiators of Sk8 The Netherlands: Sum Mo Payne and PBR.

Most of all, we need all of YOU to make this happen. We need NSOs, referees, skaters, announcers and volunteers. Louder than ever we say: THE MORE THE MERRIER! We hope you can all find your way to Sporthallen Zuid in Amsterdam on 7th September 12:00 (noon) sharp to go on for 24 hours.

We are going to have two tracks filled with non-stop derby action. We’re looking for women’s and men’s teams to all play 4 scheduled scrimmages on the ‘team track’. Your team not taking part? No problem! With an individual skater ticket you can sign up for fun challenge bouts and participate in open scrimmages on the second track. Also you will receive an awesome t-shirt and a ‘Drills & Skills’ manual free with your ticket!

For the officials crew we proudly present our event Head Refs: Cherry Fury and Fluke Skywalker. And our event Head NSO’s: Off Track and Mazuzu.

We hope you are all as excited as we are about this special event, as we cannot do without our wonderful officials. (Note: officials that also want to skate, fill in your officials registration first. You will then get explained what to do if you also want to skate)

We need to raise some proper funds to call a halt to the gruesome reality of sex trafficking, which is why we have to ask all participants to contribute. Please do remember that all profits go directly to Fier Fryslan and Centrum Kinderhandel en Mensenhandel (CKM). These are the charities supported by Sk8 the Netherlands.

Are you just as stoked as us to be a part of this amazing charity event? Then check out the links below, and get involved!

Purple People Eaters, omnomnom!

June 10th, 2013

First bout of the day had ADD’s B.ADD girls take on The Coal Girls (Blackland Rockin’ K-Rollers) from Charleroi, Belgium in a whirl of purple and pink on the track that was sometimes hard to follow! The score was quite close in the very beginning, but soon the Coal Girls picked up momentum and points to finally win 188 to 138.

Next ADD’s All Stars and Tender Hooligans (Rainy City Roller Girls) from Manchester kept the pack speed quite high at times, and had quite a few jams with no points scored, as the teams got used to each other’s jammers on the track. At half time the All Stars were leading 102 to 85, a game that ended in a win for the All Stars 193-161.

Congratulations to all the teams and a huge thanks to everyone who came out to this international affair!

24-hour Scrimmathon in September – Save the Date

May 24th, 2013

Don’t you just wish you could play roller derby all day long? Did you ever wake up at 4 am wanting to scrimmage? Well, hold on to your toe stops, because it’s happening. On September 7th and 8th the Amsterdam Derby Dames are hosting a 24-hour Scrimmathon!

And we are not just hosting this epic event for fun — it’s serious business. In the first week(s) of September 2013, a group of positive roller derby enthusiasts will be skating across The Netherlands in an effort to end sex trafficking. They will try to educate the public and raise awareness to all the people they meet.

This group reached out to all Dutch leagues asking them to organize something to raise awareness and funds along their trip. Since Amsterdam is a city where sex trafficking is an issue, the Amsterdam Derby Dames want to step up to the plate and do something extraordinary to really get some attention for this great cause. For more information about Sk8 The Netherlands check out their Facebook page. (https://www.facebook.com/Sk8TheNetherlandsToEndSexTrafficking)

When we got the dates for this trip we realized that in these weeks the Amsterdam Derby Dames are also celebrating their 4 year anniversary. All the more a reason to make this a memorable event.

An event of this magnitude needs a lot of bodies: skaters, refs and NSOs are essential to keep the games going for 24 hours. We invite teams to play, but we will be opening the event for individual skaters as well, to partake in challenge bouts and pick-up scrimmages (girls only, but also co-ed). That’s why we are asking you right now to SAVE THE DATE! You surely don’t want to miss this.

Registration for NSO-ing, refereeing, announcing and volunteering opens up soon, and so will ticket sales for skaters. But for now, make sure you mark those calendars for the 7th and 8th of September.

Apocalypse POW! – Bout report by Furrrocious

March 11th, 2013

Just over a year ago we had our very first home bout: the Rollergirls of the Apocalypse came to Amsterdam for AmsterBAM. Saturday, it was our turn to travel to Kaiserslautern, Germany to have another face-off. Unfortunately, we were down three players, so our team consisted of only 9 skaters. We were not too worried: at our last bout we played with 9 skaters and we kicked ass!

From our sponsor Just Like Your Mom Tour Support we got two vans to drive to Kaiserslautern, and after a smooth ride we arrived perfectly on time. It was an absolute pleasure being hosted by RGA, as they are such a well-organised league. We had what we needed in our dressing room and felt welcome.

While the RGA The Night Terrors took on the RocKArollers, the first part of this doubleheader, we found a quiet spot to do some stretching.

The bout started slightly later than planned, but at the whistle, it did start with a POW! RGA clearly set the pace from the get-go. With a power jam against ADD, we were behind with about 30 points after only a couple of jams, but that didn’t stop us: at half-time there was a 1 point difference. The game was fast and intense. The second half was even more exciting, as the lead in points was constantly changing, even tied at some point! At the end we were left with only 8 players after one fouled out. In the last few jams, RGA got back in the lead and scored a large amount of points in a power jam to win the game.

It was an epic bout! A lot of hard hits, quick jammers, impressive tactics and let’s not forget: great officiating (led by the amazing London Derriere). A special thanks goes out to the officials crew who must have had a tough bout to officiate.

ADD All stars and Dominic! With his pink Mohawk the girls thought he should be our mascot:

After the bout we went back to the hotel to freshen up and to get ready for the after party at the sports bar. The RGA girls had prepared capes as awards for best blocker, best jammer and MVP.

For ADD RGA voted best blocker: Abs of Steel, best jammer: Vix Vendetta and MVP: Jamakaze.
For RGA, ADD voted for best blocker: Thora, best jammer: Jumpin’ Jax Smash and MVP NebrAss Kick’r.

We definitely tried winning the after party with a lot of dancing, singing, laughing and even some beer pong. ;)

Thanks again RGA for hosting a great event and making everything run very smoothly!

Furrrocious
